I first called Better Built Basements after researching on Angies List and elsewhere for an inlaw apartment installation in the basement of my finished raised ranch. I was impressed with the reviews and the website. Fortunately for me I had good reason because whatever I read on other customers reviews was true. The owners Jim and Randy and their excellent crew of plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, tapers etc were consummate professionals.
The part I was impressed with most was everything was done as promised and because I work a night shift I got to see them everyday and it was obvious they enjoyed and took pride in all their work. They all seemed to enjoy the ribbing and good natured needling that makes for a good work environment. I respected the camaraderie they displayed in making sure the finished product was like their own home.
In our initial appointment Jimmy took all the measurements and within three days his design team had 4 separate plans for me to choose from. I chose an open floor plan. They gutted the whole finished basement walls ceilings etc. right down to the floors in one day and then just took off from there.
The work they did started right from the studs and included a full kitchen with beautiful cabinets. bathroom with five foot walkin shower. Also in the open plan was a living area with large bedroom and huge walkin closet.
Jim would call me it seemed like everyday to let me know who was coming and what time. He was great. He also went above and beyond trying to satisfy the various building code requirements my town was requiring. He must have made 15 trips to town hall explaining exactly what he was doing and why and I know he saved me several thousand dollars by his persistence.
In closing I would like to say I was completely satisfied. The clean up the end of each day was impeccable which was important because it never seemed like a messy construction site. I also felt that I made some new friends along the way which was a bonus on top of the superior craftmanship which shows in the finished apartment. I would be more than happy to show the work they did or answer any questions you may have.

The master bath renovation you did for us was so well done. I know you don't usually do just bathrooms, but this was a major renovation job. After contacting several other contractors who told us we could not both widen the door and make it into a pocket door, you told us we could and then did it. You corrected the squeaky floor and replaced the old tiles with 12" beautiful ones. You corrected all the old holes in the wall from towel racks and painted the walls the most beautiful blue. You also helped us with decisions we hadn't thought of, like a new wider threshold, paint matching the walls, and the best brand of toilet. We thank you for that.
Additionally, you worked with us when we had a death in the family and had to be in Boston several nights. You and your workers never paused or stopped and finished the job earlier than predicted. We are very pleased and will recommend you to all our friends.

As the holiday season starting coming into focus and my wife and I realized that our four children, their spouses and twelve grandkids would be spending time with us during Christmas week, we quickly decided it was time to add a new room in our unfinished basement. Something we had contemplated for some time.
We obtained quotes from two people and then my wife saw an advertisement by better Built Basements (BBB) in a magazine with a picture of a finished product on the cover. We looked at their website and read their many letters of recommendation from very satisfied customers. We immediately contacted them for an advertised free quote and design.
A few days later (on a Sunday morning), Joe, their salesman, arrived and spent a couple of hours with us discussing our needs for this room and then taking measurements. Not long thereafter, the emails arrived with several design concepts which we iterated over the next week and finally settled on a plan. We anxiously awaited the cost quote and found it to be very competitive and lower than we had expected. Because BBB had their own team to do the work and only subbed out the sheet rock, we made the decision to proceed with them to give us the best chance of finishing before Christmas.
After executing the contract, the plan was put into place to start construction on October 28th and complete in early December. Well, October 29th arrived and with it came storm Alfred and seven days without power. Now we were a week behind and BBB's projects were piling up on each other. The owner Jim reassured us that we would have our completed room before Christmas one way or the other.
Once work re-commenced, it was a joy to behold each day. Paul and his crew completed the framing, followed by Randy and his team with the electrical work. Sheet rock was installed and Danny initiated the taping before leaving to have his burst appendix diagnosed and removed. Tom arrived for the next few days and completed the taping. Al then arrived to remove the old stairs and install the new ones. Unfortunately Al hurt his back which resulted in another delay of two days. Not to worry Jim said and the work went on.
At the end of each day the area was cleaned up as advertised, allowing frequent show and tell's to friends and neighbors. Now the project became a seven day a week effort. Mike arrived on a Saturday to begin the painting and continued all day Sunday. Some final electrical work was completed along with the painting and carpet installation and we were ready for the furniture. Jim and Paul finished the job on a Sunday with the installation of shelving hardware in the two closets in the room.
As I relaxed on the new couch watching our new flat screen TV in this beautiful room, I rehashed the whole project in my mind. What impressed me the most was the way Jim and his team of highly skilled, extremely personable professionals, conducted themselves and did what they said they would do while overcoming several delays. They are truly a top notch group. I feel like I made some new friends over the last two months.

Being new CT residents from out of state my wife and I had really no idea as to where to turn for help in finishing off the basement in our home. We asked a few friends for recommendations and did some on-line research as well. We came across Better Built Basements on-line and we are very glad we did.
Of the three companies that we dealt with seriously about the project it became very apparent that Better Built Basements seemed to have total grasp of what we wanted in our basement project and what it would take to accomplish it. The project was not straightforward and required moving an entire HVAC unit, adding a walk out feature, dealing with basement support columns and also a legal egress window that was below grade. Of the three quotes that we were working on, only Better Built Basements seemed to have the answers to all of these issues fairly quickly while the others seemed to have more questions than answers after a couple of meetings. I could see then that because they specialized in basement remolding they had pretty much seen it all. I was also impressed that Better Built Basements was the only company that e-mailed us the plans for the project to review and modify with them while the others showed them to us when meeting but took them when they left not leaving me a copy to review. Before the plans were finalized Better Built Basements had a couple of on site meetings with all the trades to make sure everyone was on the same page and it took off from there.
We signed the contract the day of an earthquake, the project started the week of tropical storm Irene and in the middle we had the October 'Nor'easter of 2011. That being said, the project finished up pretty much as scheduled. The Better Built Crews were great, I was kept informed pretty much daily as to what was going on and so on. Even my neighbors commented on how neat the guys were and site was after they left every day. Not once could I say that they were looking to just finish up the job quick and move on.
Like just about any home improvement project situations pop up that need to be addressed and modified. In the few times that that happened there was always a collaborated effort to overcome the issue and make everyone happy. And if there was an adjustment to cost I was presented with it before hand, again, to make sure all were on the same page.
In the end my family was very happy with our experience with Better Built Basements. They came through from the design stage right up to the finish. If you want one company that can do it all for your basement project (including arranging for town permits and inspections) they should be your next call. Thanks again to the Better Built Basement team, one and all. We love our new basement.

What we are writing is not just a nicely worded testimonial letter; we are telling a story, a story that we couldn't wait to tell everybody – our son working far away on the other side of the Pacific, our niece living on the West coast, and our neighbors and friends – how once a nightmare has turned into the joys of owning a great "Better Built Basement!"
Located at 12 Webster Hill Blvd, West Hartford, our basement was flooded by the backwater in April 2011, with the wall panels, carpeting, furniture pieces and book collections totally ruined, leaving a smell that made us feel sick. Now, after a month's work by Better Built Basements, LLC, it looks spic and span, with newly painted walls, a new carpet, a new ceiling, a new heating system, an even larger space, and above all, a fond memory we'll cherish for many years to come. We will remember the company's absolutely great group of workers, dedicated and skillful, polite and caring, their passion for excellence, and a rare commitment to the set schedule. We won't forget, for example, how Jim, owner of the company, led a team of four in their fight against heat on July 22, the day the project began. Jim's son, a teenager, also came to help. You may say, well, there is no free lunch; you pay for what you get. It's true. But what's also true is that you are a true happy customer when you receive more, or much more, for what you have paid for. Actually the Better Built Basements LLC was the lowest bidder among four companies we had looked at. We are not only happy with Jim's fair charge but are also impressed with the added values that go beyond the dollar amount.
One such added value is the company's responsiveness. We had an unexpected renewed flooding threat just a few days ago due to the town's system failure caused by the tropical storm Irene. As we panicked, we called Jim. Within half an hour, the man showed up. He calmed us down and helped with things that were not even his responsibilities. Thanks you Jim! Thank you all those fine workers!
We are very fortunate to have had Jim and his Better Built Basements, a company we really want to recommend to all and hope our joy will become yours one day. Our niece has flown from Seattle to enjoy our new basement, and our son, daughter-in-law and grandchild will fly across the Pacific in late October to see the rebuilt basement. We recently had the opportunity to work with Better Built Basements. We had wanted to finish our basement for a few years and finally decided to take the plunge. After meeting with several local contractors we chose BBB because we were impressed by their commitment to their customers, their beautiful photo journals of completed projects, and the easygoing-manner of their sales leader, Joe. As the project continued we met Jim, Randy, Mike, Al and the rest of the BBB crew. Right from the start we knew we had made the right choice. Everyone was professional, courteous, and had the same goal—to give us the best basement possible.

"You are not kidding with the name of your company. Better Built Basements is RIGHT!!!! You took our basement from 1968 and turned it into a Supersized 2011 basement. The space has been transformed into the best room in our house.
What impressed us most about your company is your communication with us (the customer) and yourselves (the crew). There was never a time I wasn't aware of what the next steps were, and what was completed that day. It was reassuring to know everyone was on the same page as to what had been done, and where the project was going.
Another point I would like to make is how excellent everyone was at making suggestions. When an idea would come up, such as built in shelving or making the stairs down the basement transition better, it seemed like the team knew exactly what look and style was best for the space. "Last November, 2010, we met Jim and Kelly from Better Built Basements at the Home Show in Wallingford. We were interested in refinishing our basement and they presented themselves as basement specialists. We liked them and their approach to our remodeling goals.
A home evaluation was arranged and preliminary plans were drawn up by Joe in one evening that became the basis of our construction project. From the start, we were impressed with the prompt arrivals, obsessive cleanliness and the concern for our home that every member of the construction team displayed. We first heard of your company when we attended the Home Show at the Connecticut Expo Center and spoke to Mike at the booth. From the moment we met them, the people at Better Built Basements were professional, trustworthy, and thorough with their workmanship. During the initial consultation, they met with us for over two hours. This was not something we had experienced with other contractors, as they seemed to consider this time as a mere formality. "I hired Better Built Basements to handle the remodel of a 40 year old ranch that I bought from a bank foreclosure. The project included demolition, basement/kitchen/bathroom remodel, painting and a few other tasks. Unlike several of the competing bids, BBB gave a detailed project estimate with costs clearly associated with the scope of work for each phase. We have experienced numerous home improvement projects over the years, and hold this project up as one of the best. You and all of the contractors who entered our home were courteous and professional at all times. We really appreciate the fact that workers were always there when you said they would be and that the work space was kept so clean each evening when everyone went home. In addition, we were kept informed throughout the project which remained true to the outlined schedule. Even when the initial plans for the stairwell cut out had to be altered, you offered us alternatives and your recommendation turned out great.
Most of all, we were pleased with the quality of the workmanship. Both my husband and I feel as if everything from the floor to ceiling was completed as if it were part of your own homes. Your suggestions were perfect from the baseboard heat to the lighting which makes the room feel just right.
